GTX to the test slushy ice and snow

Since my previous post in early November, these trail shoes have since stretched and now fit nicely all around my feet.
So, a few weeks ago, I had the chance to put the GTX to the test, as well as the vibram outsole. There was a small snow storm that dumped around 3" of the white powder, and the 4.0gtx handled the trail really well, felt sure footed and light at the same time. A few days later, in the same park, snow in parts of the trail had melted, forming long tracks of slushy ice. How did the gtx performed? Let's just say that my calves and ankles were soaked in water, from all the splashing, and my socks were completely dried in the feet. Also, when I came home, I noticed how heavy the shoes were, having soaked all the melted snow on the upper.
Now, to the northeaster that came by on Friday, the first snowstorm of 2014: The GTX was definitely capable of handling the snow, keeping feet completely dried, though the trails were already trekked and compacted some when I ran there this morning The vibram outsoles felt very light and grippy, like snow tires, but on a few occasions, slipped a bit over roots and rocks. If there's one thing more appealing than running trails, is running them after a snow storm, when the GTX 4.0 works at its best. Happy and healthy 2014.

Stretches to conform PERFECTLY

This shoe has been an excellent winter all around trainer. The loop for gaiters is an awesome feature for snowshoe running. I have a wide toe box and a narrow heel and high arch. They conform perfectly after a one week break in. A must have in the Pacific Northwest, US.

Extremely slippery on wet surfaces

I bought the shoes to run in the terrain and the shoes were recommended to me because of the Vibram sole.
But I can hardly use them because they are extremely slippery on wet stones.

Don't worry, they'll stretch and conform to your feet.

Having had these trail runners for less than a couple of weeks, I can't really rate them for durability, though the vibram outsole looks and feel solid. Purchased them in preparation for winter running, as my kinvara tr2 are not adequate for such season.
First impression out of the box: a slight but annoying downwards pressure over the outside of feet, pressing down on last two toes. Width was good, no complaints there, as well as mid foot and heel area. Having worn Saucony's before (currently own 5 pairs, for all variations of workout), they tend to loosen up as you break them in. So, off to the trails I went.
First run, 6 miles, and I couldn't help but feel that annoying pressure, causing me to sort of stomp harder on the packed dirt trail. Second run, 5 miles, mostly on soft chipped wood. Traction was amazing, pushing really hard around turns, still trying to get rid of that annoying feeling. Third run, 6 miles again, on a mountain bike trail course (Queens NY), and they're finally showing signs of stretching, at the same time moulding around the shape of my feet. By the next run, I'm confident there will be no more of that annoying pressure. They're actually beginning to feel comfortable, so unless they're extremely tight for you, in the forefoot area (this model don't come in wide width), then they will stretch during the break in period.
Ok, so I would most likely post again, when snow arrives in our area, and I get to test the goretex waterproof feature, as well as see how those fanged soles dig into packed snow trails. Keep on trekking the world over, cheers.
