Men's Virrata

RUN - Natural Stripped down to strong. The Virrata is our lightest and most flexible training shoe and allows your foot to move naturally. We removed everything that isn’t helping your run improve. What remains is a feather-light, ultra flexible shoe with advanced cushioning that promotes a powerful stride and allows your foot to move the way it was meant to. Built on a 0mm offset, this shoe lets your feet do the work while providing plenty of protection from the road. The breathable mesh upper makes the shoe incredible lightweight and quick-drying to run in wet weather conditions. Better than Kinvara

PostedMay 14, 2013
I Run: Competitively, For fun, To set a personal best
I Use This Product For: Running
This shoe is an overall success. I had the Kinvara 3, but switched to the Virratas after the plastic heel supports in the Kinvara began to aggravate my Achilles Tendon. After about 300 miles or so the Virratas are aging well, although the outer sole is worn (as expected in any minimal shoe). WHen purchasing the shoe, I bought it a 1/2 size smaller because of the 0mm drop, which helped a lot and made the shoe fit better than it did in my normal size. I ran with these through the snowy winter and wet spring and they are holding strong. The one thing that tore almost right away was the fabric lining between the outer mesh of the shoe and my foot. Other than that it is a great shoe that I recommend for people new to minimalist shoes. More of a plush ride than the Kinvara 3 and also much more flexible. It can be used in situations ranging from long runs to speed training, and its low weight makes it almost light enough to be a racing shoe. The best minimalist shoe for the value, by far. Viva la Virrata!

Virrata Less than Durable

I Use This Product For: Running, Casual Wear
Although a very stylish shoe, the Kinvara is a much better shoe. WIth less thank 25 miles casual wear, my Virrata's are falling apart. The toe box cover on both shoes is coming unglued in many places. Very diappointed in this shoe and would not recommend this to runners lookin for a neutral shoe.

Completed my first OCR, (Indiana Spartan Sprint 2013). Arguably the hardest race yet. I wore the shoes for 2 days to try to break them in and that really wasn't necessary. Great traction, flexibility and support during the race. Also, cleaned up very easily after all the mud and water. Once gravel/sand dried completely, anything I couldn't wash out of shoe was easily vacuumed out. Shoe also didn't shrink or get stiff after total soaking. Already posted to my team to get this shoe. Thank you.

Great Low Mileage Shoe

PostedApril 30, 2013
I Run: For fun, To set a personal best, To stay in shape
I Use This Product For: Running
I was in the K3, as well as Asics Gel Excel 33. I retired the Excel, and went to the Kinvara 3 as my long distance shoe, and got the Virrata for my 6 mile and under runs. I loved the shoe, unbelievable cushioning, great fit, VERY fast. Then I decided to take it on a 13 mile run. I didn' t break myself in for the zero drop slow enough! Ended up with shin splints, and a sore achilis on the left leg. I did beat my PR for the 13 miles by over 10 minutes though!
I was sad when I traded them in with only 125 miles on them though, The wear is terrible. They are ultra soft, and that combined with no reinforcement on the outsole like the K3 dissapointed me. The outsole lugs were completely flat.
Definitely recommended to people that don't run over 6-8 miles at a time, and are used to very low drop shoes. I will stick with the K3s, and rotate a new pair of K4s in. LOVE the ride, DISLIKE the durability!

By far one of the best shoes I've ever owned, and I dropped down from the mirage to the Kinvara to these. Being a foam material on the bottom, they are more susceptible to quick degrading, however they are only slightly less durable than a "stability shoe."
Overall great shoe. Loved it at first step. Definitely would recommend to a friend.

This is a great light weight, minimal drop training door

I recently decided to try to a minimal running shoe and the Virrata was my pick. I've had issues with plantar fasciitis and achilles tendinitis in the past and hoped that getting back to a more natural running form might help. My first run was a short one with no issues. My second run was my long run and even though my calves got sore I had no other issues. I completed a speed workout today and all I can say is these shoes rock.

The team at Saucony really put their heart and sole into making this a great running shoe. I got these shoes about a week ago, and I'm very impressed. They hold up to everything so far. Muddy grass, tarmac, gravel, sand, all are conquerable in this wonderful shoe. It fits like a glove, is very stylish, and since I've been wearing them I don't want to stop running because they feel so comfortable. I would highly recommend this shoe no matter what distance you throw them. Well done, Saucony!

Incredibly versatile and great training shoe

PostedApril 12, 2013
I Run: Competitively, For fun, To set a personal best, To stay in shape
I Use This Product For: Running
Being primarily an 800m track athlete, I love how responsive this shoe is and how easy it is to sprint or pick up pace. The two main cushions in the middle of the forefoot take a few runs to get used to, but after that, it feels great to run any speed in these. In addition, I highly recommend these shoes if you deal with lower shin or ankle soreness from grinding out hills, fast tempos, fartleks, etc. as the support in the forefoot for running fast has nearly eliminated my soreness in a matter of a month. In terms of size, order half a size up from a pair of spikes, but if unsure, definitely air on the small side, because if the shoe is too big, some of the natural motion benefit of the shoe will be lost.
Overall, I recommend these shoes to anyone who wants natural motion footwear with good support, and I believe the Virrata is the best possible choice for track athletes who need a responsive, but reliable trainer for workouts.

This is my first running shoe and so far it works great. I've put just over 10 miles on it and they are very comfortable and light. I try to run outside as much as possible, but in foul weather I go to the indoor track and the shoe performs great on both surfaces.

Great shoe...questionable durability

This is exactly what I have been look for in a shoe as far as fit and performance go...not what I'm looking for in durability. The Kinvara started put the same with wear problems and changes were made to increase wear...I question why Saucony did not the same amount of rubber lug inserts on this shoe. 190-200 miles on these and the lugs are already worn off! C'mon Saucony...it's a great product, just please don't wait to make changes to it in the 2nd and 3rd generations on problems you knew existed!

Best shoe yet!

PostedMarch 22, 2013
I Run: As a social activity, For fun, To stay in shape
I Use This Product For: Running, Racing
I've been running for about 2 years now and have tried several different shoes including: VFFs, New Balance Minimus Trail 10, ASICS GEL GT-2000, and both the Saucony Kinvara 1 and 3.
When I started running 2 years ago I learned proper technique by watching YouTube videos on barefoot and natural running. This allowed me to overcome my issues with shin splints and quickly ramp-up my mileage.
Currently, I weight about 185 lbs, I'm a midfoot striker, still - occasionally - wear my VFFs, and was wearing the Kinvara 3s. Due to my mileage (40 - 50 miles per week) I was getting a minor case of runners knee and, since I'm getting faster, my feet have been taking more of a pounding in the VFFs.
My 5K race pace is 6:35 per mile to give you an idea of my speed. My training pace is usually about 8:15 per mile, sometimes less.
The Virrata is the perfect shoe for me. It feels more comfortable than the Kinvara, allows my feet to heal from my VFFs, and I don't feel ANY knee pain - even when my knees are sore from kickboxing.
Even though Saucony advertises these shoes as zero-drop, RunnersWorld showed they have about a 4mm drop while the Kinvaras have a 7mm drop. Regardless, when I tried them on, due to the padding in the forefoot, they felt like negative drop shoes (forefoot felt higher than heel). When I compared them to my Kinvara 3s they felt a lot different and were more comfortable.
These are the best shoes I've ever worn. They're absolutely perfect! With these shoes I have no doubts about increasing my mileage to 60+ per week and doing harder speed sessions without getting foot injuries.
I'll save the VFFs for a training tool and limit my miles to 20 per week. The rest will be in my Virratas. I highly recommend this shoe to any midfoot/forefoot, high-mileage runner.

In my opinion the Kinvara 3 went backwards. I loved the Kinvara until the 3. Started with knee and foot pain. I thought I had found the perfect shoe until they changed the Kinvara. I have switched to the mirage 3. It appears to have made a major leap forward compared to 1 and 2. After reading reviews I may try Viratta.
I wonder if saucony would take 2 almost new pair of Kinvara 3's back for a pair of Viratta.

Prior to this shoe, i was wearing Grid Speeds. The difference is shocking. While I would consider this a 'minimalist' shoe, I know it doesn't fit the classic description of one. Still, this shoe seems to disappear from your foot and the action your foot produces in the shoe is very natural. I would reccomend this shoe to anyone who has worn either Speeds or Kinvara!

I've had Kinvara's and FasTwitch's in the past, and after just my first run, the Virrata has moved up the list to #1 for me from Saucony. Tried them on in the store and loved the lightness of them, felt they would be cushioned well enough, and my run proved me right. Really good traction too, as I was running on varied terrain of packed snow/ice, gravel, and asphalt on my run today. If you are looking for a great lightweight racer/runner, this is your ideal shoe.

Put in about 50 miles so far. My first zero drop running shoes since high school. Coming from Kinvaras, I didn't think the 4mm difference would be very noticeable, but it was. In fact, when walking around, it feels like a negative drop because of the ample cushion. The Virratas work really well for me for distances up to 6 miles or so. Once I get fully used to the zero drop, I hope to run half marathons or maybe even full marathons in these. As for durability, they are holding up very well after 50 miles.

Outsoles worned down after 3 runs!

A few good things about these shoes: comfy and light and plenty of cushioning for longer distances. At times I feel there is too much cushioning, but I prefer firmer shoes anyhow. The fit is great and I have no complaints. I also like how the width of the soles do to span out wider at the bottom like the Kinvara 3 as I sometimes rub my shoe against the inside of my calves between strides. Now the bad, the outsole design is extremely poor and I'm giving these shoes 1-star for durability. After 3 runs (42km) I had worn down the first step of the knobby "pods" by 3 mm easily on the outside part of the shoes (I'm a midfoot striker with mild pronation). I would not recommend these shoes unless you are a neutral foot striker. Also after running through lots of wet puddles, I washed my shoes yesterday and found that the upper liner under mesh has a small hole worn through where my pinky toe rubs against. These are the worse shoes for durability I have ever purchased (my first ever Saucony's too). I've heard only good things about the Kinvara 3, but these Viirata shoes I have only owned for 3 weeks (150 km) and the premature wear is simply unacceptable for a performance running shoe. An improvement would be to have a flatter outsole design (like Kinvara 3). Flexibility is not as important to me as durability. I think one can have both without the deep groves and knobby design. Also some additional reinforced wear zones for runners with pronation could make these shoes more durable.

I can't tell you how amazing this shoe is. Its so flexible with the perfect amount of support and is so fast. This is my first 0mm drop shoe and I really like it. I run about 70 mpw and these shoes are super durable. I can't wait until the virrata 2 comes out. The only reason I didn't give it a 5/5 was that there's way to much cushioning. I hope that in the virrata 2 we can see less cushioning.
Thanks for the great shoe!

I'm kinda suffering through Plantar fasciitis, I start training for my next Marathon training Feb 24 (Vancouver Marathon in June). I been using stability shoes cause of my higher milage, I appear to have a average arch and I don't think I pronate to much. Would you recommend this shoe? I just can't get over the soreness, I'm just hoping for warming weather, soon. I really wanna break 3:30 this year.

Great Ride Awful Upper/Lacing

PostedFebruary 15, 2013
I Run: Competitively, For fun, To set a personal best, To stay in shape
I Use This Product For: Running, Racing
Saucony really thought out of the box with the concept of the shoe being 0mm drop but still with cushioning and flexibility but not the whole shoe doesnt meet that concept. The transition is pretty smooth you feel your feet rolling along with the 0mm drop but its a bit firm it could use just a touch more cushioning. I like the flexibility baked into the outsole.
The disappointment comes with the upper. Its just so much more stiff than expected and than what I'm used to with my Skechers.
The real design flaw comes with the lacing. Im baffled why Saucony used this lacing system for the Virrata which they had in the earlier Kinvara which they've since replaced on the Kinvara?? The lacing system is terrible, the fit is not adaptive to keeping you locked on the platform , the lacing needs to be more of a traditional design. The loopholes on the current lacing system are spread way to far apart from each other to make the fit tight and secure.
I would recommend that people check it out, but if your like me and you have a hard time fitting in most shoes, this might not work for you because of the lacing and upper.
I'll hold out for VIrrata2, the potential is there for this to be great, its just not there yet.

Personally find this lacing design better than the kinvara 3. This sort of side ways loop prevents them from digging into the top of the foot, which is usually not noticeable, but with the new kinvaras it is for me.

I have been running in them exclusively on the treadmill so far (up to 60 minutes at a time), owing to wintertime, so I don't know how durable they would be on road or trail. What I can say is that they feel wonderful in every way on the treadmill. I especially like the flexibility of the shoe. I have been focusing on running form - higher cadence, midfoot strike, etc, and I do get the sense that these shoes help encourage better form. Despite the incredible lightweight, minimalist feel, there is also excellent cushioning, and on my better days I feel like I'm running on a cloud. As far as outdoor use, I suspect these shoes would be excellent for a road race or for track workouts. The shoes (and feet) might get beat up a bit on trails. I liked these shoes so much I already bought a second pair.
